just to say after reading through your message i have noticed you said someone to lead a forums exc exc all websites can be run by me easily all updated nearly daily and i spend around 10 hours/week doing this so i think websiteing and other things related to the website and forums are managed quite easily

Now searching for an extra hand to help lead the project some one who has lead one before.

Checked your Ubuntu link in between. You try to act as Game Master, lets say: project planner. This is a hell of work and dont believe everything wil be done in the way you think of. ;) Next to the infrastructure (CVS/versiontracker, forum board for discussions, work planner, etc.) You need to nail down everything you can before even 1 line of code is typed. The less is clean the more discussions will come up later on and project will be delayed. You give it 2 years till it should be finished. Based on what? The game itself, as far as I see, is not defined yet. How do you know it can be done in 2 years? Many ppl are very motivated at beginning and then somehow "fade" away. If the "programmer" (lead programmer) f.e. offers time by 4hours/week better choose another one as lead programmer offering more time. List somewhere how many hours/days everyone is offering his time. Sure there are always RL time troubles ppl are involved but it helps more to share/split tasks.
Realy make sure the game structure/content/functionality is nailed down from beginning. So no one is frustrated later on by saying "Oh, I thought it would go that way"... Many things can also be discussed. Its an illusion to think: "It goes its way out of nothing", then the project will fail.
And one last thing: You need a GFX artist (not that easy to find) who knows how deal with RPG GFX. SFX can come later but GFX is neccessary.
There is much more power in a team but it needs to be leaded and controlled.

I agree to the writers here. You already have an idea what to do. Based on what you have written so far, I have no closer idea how it exactly looks like: Functionality, GFX style, attributes, leveling, quests, NPCs, traits, item system,effects like weather, day/night .... Good way to say its like Ultima series f.e. Your next tool should be Word or something similar to nail down what you exactly want and maybe some extended feature you would like to have. Since I started with a RPG myself I know now why there are not so many related to other game types. You have so many things to consider! I also made some thoughts about MMPORG and it can end up in huge complexity. You need somehing like a DB to save players chat text (private, public), item trades, any other playrs actions, etc. Security is also a point concerning MMPORG. Check the Internet (Google) about some free MMPORGs, I know there are many. Make your studies and check them out: What you like what you don't like and in the end: Offer something addictive no MMPORG offers it that way. And very important: Find something ppl keep playing (long term fun strategy). F.e.: smart quest types not alway like: Kill A and brng me back its drop B.
Finally, if this is your first Python project, I suggest you create a completely other very simple game just to get familiar with Python and Pygame. If you really want to stay on your idea, start first with a simple client GUI in which you can walk around the way you wanted. Keep everything data related in a separata module (f.e. landscape information, read_area('Faenrun') ). This will allow you later on to switch relatively easily getting data driven information from server. This way you dont have to bother MMPORG techniques from beginning and you can think about that later.

I understand you wanna get all attention you need (your game task is very expensive) but what do you think will happen if every game developer here, every week or day, do a silly-release? This will lead to the chaos!

Now a good suggestion: in a SO complex project you'll need a issue tracker, a forum, a mailing list, a web site and (for sure) a source repository (even if you will be the only one developer).

Have a look mainly in play_level.py and ardentryst.py. If you can understand what's going on, then you might be able to learn some coding styles from that, as I believe my project is a good start into what you're going to be trying to do. If it looks too complicated, it probably is.

I find it's great that you're getting creative and are thinking about undertaking a major programming task but by the looks of it, it doesn't look like it can get anywhere. Firstly, your project plan has to be clear, well thought-out and feasible. There are entire feasibility studies devoted to this.

From experience, even simple RPG games can be (and usually are) difficult to do properly, let alone an MMORPG---which, ironically is the category of games in which most begginner programmers attempt and fail horribly in (myself included) Today, MMORPGS are run by huge companies with hundreds of employees who work for months and months to create (AND maintain) them.

There is a LOT of work that goes into games, and maybe you should tackle something a bit smaller like an arcade game, then work your way up to an RPG, then maybe try an MMORPG.
