DCR (Dead Creatures Rising) is a game-engine for round-based strategy games (like Fire Emblem).

DCR is designed as an easy-to-use and easy-to-modify engine. It's very easy to add own content like units, maps and scripted events.

Fun game! I found the controls a bit weird at first - having to click again on the unit to confirm, and having the move reset clicking elsewhere - but I got used to it. The fading effects are nice. It seems like a great start and a good engine. Too bad it's discontinued :(

shaun, try running it from the command line or from idle so that you can see (and post) the error message. If you right click on the .py file, you should be able to choose "edit with idle". Otherwise there is no way to determine what is going wrong.

Your pygame version. pygame 1.8.1 should work. the last stable release is in svn (svn checkout dcr-read-only), but on the download section of the googlecode page there are some other versions, but i stopped working on this game a while ago

Ok Ive figured out the problem. You are importing Desc from each file with the following line:
exec "from %s import Desc"%(scen)
But does not contain anything called Desc nor does and

I am looking at the new version. :)
In the main menus, you can add a >back> button for when you choose "new campaign".
And if there are no save games, you could make an empty screen, where you can see that there are no games to load. And the "back" button.
And when you lose the game, load the main menu instead of just silently exiting the game.
Mmmmm, can i join your project to communicate with you easier? I might be able to help. Who knows?

It's best to create a new map, then create a new tileset with std_tiles.png, make your map and save it as myMap.tmx. You have to explicitly name and save it as .tmx. In the next release, it will support *.tmx.gz files

Whoa, the path is great! Exactly what i had in mind!
Man, you are a great programmer! Puff! *magic done*

I was trying to understand how to make my own maps in tiled. I opened map1 and map2 in tiled, but when i change and save them as "tmx", the XLM-like format dissapears from them. And the maps fail to load in DCR... I am using the latest version, tiled 0.72.

"The secret of the chocolate milk" is the demo-scenario from the wiki :)
the pre-defined creatures are located at DCR/src/content.
If you want to make a real-time game, then my game-engine will not fit your needs, since always only one unit can move at once. Sometime ago, I created a little game where you could run around (in 'real-time') and meet NPCs running around, and there where round-based battles (a little like those old final-fantasy games for snes). But it was written in java and i don't have the source-code anymore :(

Aha! I found the creatures in src/content folder. :)
The map scrolling is very good now.
I deleted the "save.gz" file by mistake and in game, when i tried to load, i got a fast error and the game closed silently. I think this is a little bug. Just letting you know. :)

I understand there are some pre-defined creatures in the engine somewhere.

You have to use 'svn' to checkout svn-repositories. you can open " in a browser, but then you have to download every single file by it's own. I you don't want to or you can't use svn, i uploaded an archieve with the current release at

I updated the wiki, maybe it's more helpfull now ;)

I am not good at svn stuff. " dcr-read-only", in mozilla firefox, says "The requested URL /svn/trunk/ dcr-read-only was not found on this server."
Maybe if you make more changes, you make version 0.8.1, or something.
And about the moving troops: the extra click is very necessary. What i am trying to say is to highlight the path to where you click, instead of moving the character temporary, and be able to UNDO the movement. Just like TBS games. You select the character, click, and see the path highlight. When you extra-click, the character moves. :)

Have you tested the newest release? There was a bug in an release i uploaded a while ago and fixed it without giving it another version number. The error seems to be a little strange... Have you a file ./DCR/scenarios/ ? Try just removing it.

I changed map-scrolling, i think it is better now. You can get it via svn:
svn checkout dcr-read-only

btw, there are some command-line options for DCR:
-debug enables the debug-mode (just a verbose output on the console)
-cheat enables some 'cheats' (for testing,you an press 1 to empoison the unit under the cursor)

The extra-click has a reason, it's because directly after movement, you can choose which enemy-unit your unit will attack. you can undo your movement by clicking on any other point.

Hehe, Tiled Map Editor is great stuff! I heard about it.
I checked the wiki. Very nice. Maybe you finish the Creating Scenarios tutorial one day. :)
You could also correct one thing when moving troops: when you click the spot where you want to move your character, the path to that point should highlight, or something like Heroes. Right now, when you click the spot where you want to move the character, the character it moves there, but you must click the character again to make it permanent... Right now it's a little un-natural.

My game is real-time, but when you fight, it's turn-based. You can check There isn't much to see yet. It's a huge project.

You can make maps with the Tiled-mapeditor ( Of course you can use my game or its engine for your own games. what exactly are you working on?

Moving the map is buggy. When i press CTRL and move the map, i totally lose control, i can barely find the place...

I would like to know how you made map.tmx and std_tiles.desc. What programs do you use? Maybe you can provide the tools?

I am working on a game myself. I have most of the database i want to use. I just need a good engine to make my game. I need a RPG/turn based strategy kind of thing. And you game is very nice for what i need. Maybe i could use your engine...?

There's a second mission in the Beginning-Campaign avaiable.
I changed a lot of scripting-stuff, I hope it is now much more easy and clearer how to create scenarios. Maybe someone wants to create his own scenario? If you have questions, just ask! Any feedback is welcome! For example tell me how the game runs at your computer.

Ok! I can suggest a more reliable approach: use a version control support like SVN. If you (and you mate) register a new product onto googlecodes, you'll get SVN and other things!

'smoothscale' is new in pygame 1.8, so I think your pygame-version is just to old. Maybe you don't want to upgrade or to change all 'transform.smoothscale'-calls to 'transform.scale'. In the next release, the engine will decide on its own when to use scale or smoothscale, depending on the pygame-version being used.

It's because I don't work on this game alone (a friend will help me and write some scenarios etc.), so it's important that the most recent version of the game is always avaiable since very often things need to be changed.

Once you know what you are doing this is quite a nice game.
I think some gui improvements should be your first order of business, and then a manual, something like, a button to end turn, and making it so you don't accidentally attack allies/heal enemies - it needs to be clearer ;)
Also it would be nice if there were a way to click the attacks you want to use, either selecting or wesnoth style where a pop-up comes up before each battle...

Well done though, the game is progressing nicely :)

the error is because i changed how the scenario-class and the map-class work. the test-campaign is also just to test some features, i think the 0.9 release wil have a fully playable campaign :)

The problem is, the tutorial has only one section (so far), so loading the second section will just fail. OK, that not very nice, i know... :)
