Quabro - 0.5.1

Tommi Helander (eddix)

Quabro is an arcade game where the object is to clear away the blocks on the screen by hitting them with the ball, controlled by four paddles on each side of the screen, without letting the ball leave the screen.

Current features:

  • 20 playable levels
  • 5 difficulty levels that modify the game speed and score
  • Items hidden in blocks which are released when the block is destroyed (currently 5 different items)

The game is very early in development, therefore it's recommended for testing/preview purposes only. Bugs and unexpected behaviour are to be expected and there might be big changes in features, levels and gameplay between these early versions of the game.

Comments are more than welcome and at the moment I'm especially interested in constructive feedback about the gameplay, as well as experiences with different operating systems (I can currently test the game on Windows (XP, 7) and Linux) and different versions of Python and Pygame.

System requirements (tested on):

-Python 2.6.5 or later (3.x as well)

-Pygame 1.8.1 or later

GPL, version 3

New in this version:

  • Modified difficulty levels
  • Bug fix: sometimes items used to activate even before appearing.

Looks very promising! The difficulty level is also fine. Keep on developing this game:) It reminds me some arkanoid from good, old AMIGA, which also has 4 paddles, but I can't remember the title...

Nice concept but i found the difficulty too hard especially when the ball is around the corner.Perhaps adds a automatic help in this case. I will see it his evolve. Good job anyway.

New version (0.3) is here! See 'Changes' section for details. Check out the game music sample by an old friend of mine, it's pretty cool. I haven't recently had too much time for this project, so updates have not been coming out that often. Despite that, the game is starting to take shape and I believe I can update more often in the near future. Anyway, give this new baby a try and tell me what you think.

Xandar, yes it does. My plan is to at least add different difficulty levels that affect the game speed. I'm also considering the possibility that you would have to destroy at least, let's say, 75 % of all blocks in a level before a timer runs out. Of course, the more blocks you would destroy before time runs out, the better your score would be. There are also plans for collectable upgrades that will help you out. I think by adding these elements, there would be more possibilities to tune the overall game play and difficulty.

Still hard. Needs something, but not sure what.

New version (0.2) available. I have upgraded the graphics and added some basic sounds (warning: they're a bit buggy). Still a work in progress, but give it a try and tell me what you think!

Hard, but it was interesting enough to make me want to check it out. I'm curious to see how this will evolve.

Thanks Zachariah! I will update this pretty often (between 1-3 weeks) while it's in it's early development stages.
