Description

Rally 7 is a car racing game from Infukor inspired by an arcade classic with a similar name. Written in Python and using Pygame and Numeric, it should be playable on a number of different platforms given a fast enough computer. The aim of the game is to navigate your car around the rally course - a maze surrounded by scenery - collecting flags and avoiding rocks and the red cars, making sure that the flags are cleared before your fuel runs out. If the red cars get too close, a smoke screen can be created to make them crash, but since this uses fuel, it may be best not to do so too often.

Changes

Relicensed under the GPL version 3 or later. Added Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) package support.

Ivan, unless pygame.surfarray now supports numpy, you'll still need to use Numeric since it's really a pygame dependency, not a Rally 7 one. Sorry!

of course i've downloaded the latest numpy package for py 2.5, but it is different than the Numeric pacakge. when do you plan to redesign your game to numpy package?

i have python 2.5. when i try to run rally7.py i get an D:\dev\pygame\Rally7-1.0.6\rally7.py:554: RuntimeWarning: use surfarray: No modu le named Numeric and finally NotImplementedError: surfarray module not available exception what is wrong? thank you

Thanks for the comments, Rolando! Take a look at the command line options in the README.txt file to change the display size: there's --small (or --halfsize), --medium (4/5 size) and --fullscreen (if the window furniture is part of the problem). Enjoy!

Nice game, I really like how the music looks like those old arcade machine, the only problem is that the window (just like Ryan Charpentier sayed) does not fit my resolution (1024x768). Other than that, it's a nice game

Ryan, did you try the game full screen? Did it look alright? Also, what was the performance like and what kind of hardware do you have? I've tested on 2GHz P4 and above, but I'd be interested to know what it's like on slower hardware (without getting my ancient hardware out, that is). Oh, and thank you very much for the mini-review! ;-)

I like how this game is in the retro arcade style of the original Rally X arcade game. It has the same graphics and an arcadey starting screen. The retro fonts are a nice touch as well. My only negative comment is the window height you set barely fits on my screen (1024x768 resolution) and when you lose all 3 lives but still have credits left, you start back at level 1. Also it'd be cool if the starting screen flashed the "Insert Coin" message that most arcade games do, and having a section that shows the controls quickly would be helpful as well. Exellent job overall.

P.S. You'll get the "ZeroDivisionError: float division" error if you've run the game program from the "dev edition" since the archive doesn't contain the images and music. It's best to get the full game or to generate the resources yourself (see the README.txt file). I'll make a nicer error message in the next release - sorry!

Ryan, is this the version via the download link above? Which versions of Python, Pygame, Numeric? And do you do a "python setup.py install" or just run it out of the Rally7-1.0.1 directory? (Both should work.)

Can't really rate your game as I get a ZeroDivisionError exception as soon as I run it. Something to do with line 417.
