Description

This was my entry for PyWeek #8. The game features Adventure Island type gameplay, 5 levels of excruciating difficulty, a boss, tons of baddies, and much more!

Changes

The post-competition version of BubbMan 2. Features two new levels, three new soundtracks, a ton of bug fixes, and more! The levels have also been rearranged and tweaked, giving it a smoother experience.

Here's a list of everything new:
  • Two brand new levels!
  • Levels have been tweaked and rearranged
  • Some tiling issues have been fixed
  • There were a few corner catching bugs on slopes. These have been fixed
  • Three new soundtracks have been added
  • The final boss is more challenging
  • You can no longer wall jump on moving platforms (hindered gameplay)
  • Water jumping, formerly a bug, as been turned into a feature!
  • Previously the game would occasionally record the wrong time. Erased!
  • There was a bug where you'd hit spikes when you didn't. Yup, that's been fixed too.
  • Various minor bugs that made me wince have been cleaned up

@tyger: I know - I myself am on Ubuntu Linux. ;) The game should run if you have Python and PyGame installed, regardless of what system you're on.
August 21, 2009 1:29pm - F. Aschwanden - nickname: (tyger)
Sadly the game wont run on Mac OSX. There are other systems beside of MS Windows.
August 20, 2009 9:08pm - pymike - nickname: (pymike)
Make sure PyGame is installed for your current version of Python. If you're on Windows then you'll need to use this installer:

Do you have Python 2.5+ and PyGame 1.8.1+ installed?

August 8, 2009 11:39am - Mystex - nickname: (mystex) - 5/5
Oh... haha xD Maybe when I was spamming the right shift and somehow pressed Z + X + Shift and it did it. Well, nice easter egg surprise! :)
August 8, 2009 11:27am - pymike - nickname: (pymike)
@Mystex: That's actually a cheat/easter egg. I used it to quickly test levels I was creating. And you were somehow doing it wrong - the real code is: Z + X + SHIFT.
August 7, 2009 3:03pm - Mystex - nickname: (mystex)
:O I found a glitch. If you spam the reset button (right shift) at the beginning of the level a couple times, really fast, you magically appear at the next checkpoint in the level.

Thanks guys! :D

@Arkapravo: I made the original version in a week (for PyWeek #8), and implemented the DX version's new features off and on over a month's time.

NOOO! HE'S EATING MY LANDSCAAPE!! but yea, really good game! I like it :D
August 5, 2009 2:15pm - Arkapravo Bhaumik - nickname: (arkapravobhaumik) - 5/5
WONDERFUL ! ..... how long did it take you to make it ? ..... I have made some of these types games with GAMEMAKER-7.0 .....but with Pygame it is a revelation !
August 5, 2009 12:32am - Kenny - nickname: (xarver) - 5/5
This game is fun; It really kept me playing.
Hard, but it really gives you that class oldy game feel and it's entertaining.
5/5 all the way. :)
July 8, 2009 6:28pm - pymike - nickname: (pymike)
@evankroske: Lucky dawg.

@nbaker: That's a huge compliment! Contra is my favorite run n' gun ever. Thank you. :)
July 8, 2009 2:58pm - Evan Kroske - nickname: (evankroske) - 5/5
I thought you said you made the final boss more challenging. I could still run right in front of the lawnmower and not have to worry about explosions at all. Great game anyway!
July 2, 2009 8:16pm - Nolan Baker - nickname: (nbaker) - 5/5
I haven't been that determined to beat a game since Contra. I think this is a bit better of a game though since it's actually possible to win. Great job.
June 26, 2009 2:54am - Josh T - nickname: (mrbluesky) - 5/5
Great game! I beat all of the levels except the last one without cheating. Once I realized he was throwing bombs at me I said fuckthis and made his speed 10x slower.
June 14, 2009 1:52pm - ffao - nickname: (ffao)
Well, forget about that last one. I was using the A+B+Select skip-checkpoint thing without knowing it (I didn't look at the code, but it's an easy combination to type accidentally.) So make that 16.4.
June 14, 2009 1:41pm - ffao - nickname: (ffao)
Level 2 15.7 http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7647/bubb2.jpg
I think this level wasn't included in the pyweek version. But anyway, this is the best I could do, and I think it's somewhat tight.
June 14, 2009 11:13am - ffao - nickname: (ffao)
Level 1 16.5: http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/2255/bubb1.jpg

Nice! Oh, and BTW, Level 1: 16.6

June 8, 2009 5:30pm - Luca Fabbri - nickname: (keul)
What's "DX" stay for?
June 6, 2009 6:23pm - Thomas Downs - nickname: (tnelsond) - 5/5
Good game! The last level was too easy though.
June 6, 2009 3:50pm - pymike - nickname: (pymike)
And here it is, nearly a month later. :) Give it a play, there's a ton of new updates!
May 11, 2009 8:49pm - pymike - nickname: (pymike)
Nice! The De Luxe edition will be out after PyWeek judging is over, and will have two or three more levels, tweaking, and bug fixes.
May 11, 2009 7:14pm - Jordan Trudgett - nickname: (tgfcoder)
Finally finished it, the snow level was by far the hardest... :P
I needed like 3 more checkpoints in that level.. XD
May 11, 2009 6:54pm - Jordan Trudgett - nickname: (tgfcoder) - 5/5
Great, simple game which is very addictive. Probably should add some easier levels too, but good work nevertheless!
May 9, 2009 7:43pm - Joshua Skelton - nickname: (joshua)
Very polished and well executed! It is difficult but I managed to play through in a single sitting.
May 4, 2009 9:36pm - pymike - nickname: (pymike)
Thanks guys! Spent a LOT of time on it.
May 4, 2009 7:42pm - Luca Fabbri - nickname: (keul) - 5/5
Mike this is really GREAT!
May 4, 2009 2:40pm - Ken Lauer - nickname: (kne)
Great work! Very nicely polished.
May 3, 2009 11:18pm - Ian Mallett - nickname: (geometrian) - 4/5
Nice fun game. IMO way too hard, especially at the beginning--maybe add easier levels? Snow level is especially difficult, and the last level is actually easier. Other than that, good gfx, effects, speed, story, and production. Good (i.e., weird) interpretation of the theme.
